Fixing BlackBerry Would Be Enormous Task for Lenovo

After putting itself up for sale in August, BlackBerry reportedly has a new interested buyer: Chinese tech behemoth Lenovo.
The Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed sources familiar with the situation, reports that Lenovo is considering a bid to purchase the entirety of BlackBerry, the struggling handset maker that has seen its share of the market for smartphones plummet. Once the hottest hand in mobile devices, BlackBerry has seen its market share of smartphones dwindle to around 3% as Google and Apple have risen. Previous reports from Bloomberg and Reuters indicated that companies including SAP, Cisco, Samsung, and Google have been interested in buying BlackBerry in parts. Aside from devices, the company makes operating systems for distributed systems. Other interested parties reportedly include BlackBerry co-founder Mike Lazaridis and Cerberus Capital Management LP. BlackBerry and Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd., one of the company’s biggest shareholders, reached a preliminary buyout deal of $4.7 billion last month.

  1. First of all, BlackBerry has been a really successful company in the last decade. This company was able to sell a huge amount of mobile devices being one of the most powerful undertakings in the communication market.
After a notorious lack of innovation during the last years, BlackBerry has not been able to compite with its competitors and its market power has decreased incredibly.
Because of that, new emerging companies, such as Levono, are willing to buy the company of BlackBerry or at least important departments that can be really useful in their future management.
Acquisitions and mergers are usual attempts for companies to grow and spread its barriers. Some example of successful acquisitions are YouTube in favor of Google or Skype for Microsoft.

First of all, we must say that whoever wants to buy Blackberry has to face an important decision: whether to keep their proprietary smartphone operating system or not.
Secondly, if Lenovo acquires Blackberry, there might be strong connections and integration between the PC-industry and the mobile one, being Lenovo a major player in PC manufacturing.

At the moment, Apple and Microsoft are dominating the mobile phone market. The operation systems Android and iOS are the hypes nowadays. Blackberry missed this train. So it is essential now to see which company will buy Blackberry and how this will influence the IT market.
If Lenovo buys Blackerry, there will be a new rival which the other two big companies hadn't to compete yet. With the name Blackberry, Lenovo will a have a huge advantage entering the western countries as in Europe and the United States, because it is well-known brand. They will profit from the statue Blackberry has requiered until now, and regain the strong posititon it had on the mobile phone market.
The lanscape will be split up, no more in two but in three parts in the american and european market.
